Mennonite Church Canada re: CO Status

At its annual assembly of 2006, Mennonite Church Canada delegates proposed and passed the following resolution:

1.1. Concientious Objector Status

Whereas the government of Canada

Is moving Canada's military from peacekeeping duties to direct military interventions
Is significantly increasing spending for the military
And whereas current legislation forces conscientious objectors to contribute to the military budget through taxation

Be it resolved that this assembly mandate the General Board to make representation in consultation with our partners (for example: Mennonite Central Committee, Project Ploughshares) to the Government of Canada, urging the government to enact legislation which would allow conscientious objectors to direct the military portion of their taxes to activities of development and peace.
